Nematode parasitism affects lying time and overall activity patterns in lambs following pasture exposure around weaning

چکیده

We investigated the effects of gastrointestinal nematode (GIN) challenge on activity in first season grazing lambs naturally exposed to two different levels multispecies GIN infections. Ewes and their twin-born were turned-out graze permanent pasture enclosures contaminated with previous year, thereby exposing them overwintering strongyle larvae. Animals low parasite exposure group (LP) dewormed monthly 0.2 mg ivermectin (Ivomec® vet, oral suspension) per kg body weight, whereas those high (HP) left untreated. At weaning, allocated one out four groups based weight sex (HPE, n = 15; HPR, LPE, 14; LPR, 14), nearby non-contaminated ley similar size. Activity patterns monitored from day ?7, i.e. 7 days pre-weaning, until 49, 49 post-weaning, by fitting all IceQube sensors (IceRobotics). Body was weekly ?21, faecal samples at 7, 35 for egg counts (EPG) using McMaster-technology a validated Droplet Digital PCR protocol determine composition. All statistical analyses performed R studio, mixed models repeated measures. In data analyses, recordings treated as period, generating total eight periods. Average daily lying time had significant interaction between period (P 0.0013), animals HP having 101 ± 31 min shorter compared LP. Motion Index (MI; absolute value 3-D acceleration) 0.0001) lower average MI Both gain EPG significantly (P<0.0001) LP during course study. The molecular investigation showed that predominantly infected Teladorsagia spp., combined proportions Haemonchus spp. conclusion, this study shows around weaning affected moderate This indicates there is potential use automated behaviour diagnostic tool detection parasites even infection levels.

Age of Weaning and Parasitism in Merino Lambs

Merino lambs born in September and October 1964 were weaned at 4, 6 and 11 weeks of age, at average liveweights of 9 kg, 12 kg, and 19 kg respectively, on to a pasture of phalaris and white clover. The lambs remaining with their mothers for 11 weeks showed the earliest onset of an appreciable worm infection which reached a peak in December about one month after weaning. Similar levels of infect...

Effect of grazing management on minimising effects of parasitic nematodes on lamb production

An integrated management system involving cattle, ewes and lambs developed to minimise levels of parasitic nematode contamination of pasture was evaluated in a 2-year (1989-1991) study. Four experimental farmlets were managed as self-containcd units over a May-May year. Over the two years, stocking rate averaged 15 su/ha and cattle:sheep ratio 35:65. Three treatments (lambs regularly drenched, ...

Somatotropic Axis and Nutrition in Young Ruminants around Weaning Time*

The somatotropic (GH-IGF-I) axis consists of many hormonal and nutritional factors that control GH release from the somatotrophs in the anterior pituitary. The GH-releasing substances are GHRH and GHS (GHRP or ghrelin), while the GH releaseinhibiting substances are somatostatin (SRIF), insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I), leptin and glucocorticoids. However, there is evidence showing that nutr...

Lipid Oxidation in M. longissimus dorsi and M. semimembranosus in Lambs Reared Indoors and on Pasture

Lipid oxidation was studied in M. longissimusdorsiand M. semimembranosusin male lambs of Northeastern Bulgarian Fine Wool Breed and cross of this breed with Ile de France, reared indoors and on pasture. The oxidation of the lipids was determined by quantification of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), formed during the storage of the muscles at 4 ˚С until 6th dayand -20 ˚С until 90...

Evolution of parasitism in nematode-trapping fungi.

We are studying the evolution of parasitism in a group of soil-living ascomycetes that can grow as saprophytes as well as parasites by forming special morphological structures called traps. Analyses of 18S ribosomal DNA sequences have shown that these fungi form a monophyletic and isolated clade among the ascomycetes. The phylogenetic patterns within this clade are concordant with the morpholog...
